Drainage and sewage submersible pumps for wastewater selection

Drainage Pump vs Sewage Pump: Start with What Is in the Water

Wastewater selection23 September 2026

A flooded basement, a rainwater pit and a sewage sump can all need a submersible pump. The water in those pits is not the same. Choosing on horsepower alone can lead to clogging, excessive wear or a pump that never reaches the required flow.

A drainage pump generally serves relatively clean water or water with limited small debris, within the model’s stated limits. A sewage pump is designed for wastewater duties and may offer a solids-handling hydraulic design. This is a category distinction, not a promise that any sewage pump will pass every solid or fiber.

Ask these questions before quoting

  1. What enters the pit? Rainwater and leaves are different from domestic wastewater, sand, sludge or fibrous material.
  2. How large are the solids? Compare their size and shape with the exact model’s published free passage and impeller design; do not infer the passage from the outlet diameter.
  3. What flow and head are needed? Include vertical lift and friction in the discharge line. Long small-diameter pipes and check valves matter.
  4. How will the pump start and stop? Confirm float-switch clearance, minimum operating water level, and protection against running dry.
  5. What happens after installation? Plan safe access for cleaning and inspection, especially where solids may accumulate.

For a construction pit containing abrasive sand, a standard household drainage pump may also be unsuitable. Tell the supplier about the sand rather than describing all dirty water as “sewage.” For persistent stringy material, ask specifically about anti-clog or cutter options supported by the exact product; the name “sewage pump” alone is not enough.
